Entangled Destiny: Trees & People of the Mediterranean

Entangled Destiny project, funded by National Geographic Society explores the deep-rooted connection between Mediterranean communities and three iconic tree species: the olive, carob, and stone pine. These trees have shaped local cultures, economies, and landscapes for centuries, but their cultural significance is slowly eroding due to modernisation and climate change.

Through a unique blend of scientific research and storytelling, the project will uncover the history, ecological importance, and cultural rituals tied to these trees, highlighting the wisdom of traditional tree stewardship. As 3 National Geographic explorers, we will travel to Lebanon, Italy, and Spain, documenting the stories of local communities and their multi-generational bonds with these trees.

Using a customised van as a mobile story-collection hub, we will engage with local communities, capturing their stories through photography, video, and interviews. The collected stories will be showcased in a public exhibit, featuring scientific insights, personal narratives, and multimedia content.

Our mission is to preserve and celebrate these cultural legacies, inspiring future generations to reconnect with their natural heritage and continue the stewardship of Mediterranean trees.

We first crossed paths at the National Geographic Explorers Festival in Washington, D.C., in June 2022. Three Mediterranean women from three different countries, we bonded over our shared memories, deep connections to the Mediterranean region, its people, and its trees. We also shared our concerns about the fading intangible heritage tied to this landscape.

Each of us brought a unique perspective and professional background, but we all shared a common goal: to take action. From this shared passion, Entangled Destiny was born. We chose three iconic Mediterranean trees—the olive, stone pine, and carob—to represent the entangled destiny of people and Mediterranean trees.
