Four new WILDCARD podcast episodes explore rewilding in Europe

Wildfire recovery starts underground. A new WILDCARD podcast episode reveals the microscopic soil life rebuilding ecosystems after the Vesuvius fires, one of four new episodes on European rewilding.

What happens when people leave the land, when forests return on their own, or when nature refuses to follow our expectations? Four new episodes of WILDCARD: The Forest Game take listeners on a journey through some of Europe’s most fascinating ecological transformations, revealing how landscapes, wildlife, and even microscopic organisms are reshaping the continent’s future.

Of particular relevance to wildfire recovery, Episode 7, The Invisible Architects, shifts the focus beneath our feet. Following devastating wildfires on Mount Vesuvius, researchers uncovered a hidden world of bacteria, fungi, and soil organisms that drive ecosystem recovery. These microscopic communities rebuild soil health, recycle nutrients, and create the foundations without which forest regeneration could not take place. Their work may be invisible to our eyes, but it is essential for successful rewilding.

The other three episodes explore natural reforestation in Portugal’s Trás-os-Montes region, a Czech field that became valuable grassland rather than forest, and the dynamic relationship between regenerating forests and returning wildlife. Together, they reveal that rewilding is neither simple nor predictable, with forests, grasslands, wildlife, and soil organisms all playing interconnected roles in shaping Europe’s future landscapes.

Produced within the WILDCARD project, the podcast combines scientific expertise with engaging storytelling to bring Europe’s rewilding revolution to life. Listen to all four episodes here.

European Forest Institute
The European Forest Institute is an international organisation established by European States with the objective to conduct research and provide policy support on issues related to forests. EFI works to promote forest research, facilitate and stimulate forest-related networking and support the dissemination of policy-relevant information on forests and forestry.
