Mediterranean forests hold an extraordinary wealth of genetic diversity, the invisible foundation of biodiversity, resilience, and climate adaptation. Yet Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) remain largely absent from public conversation, even as climate change and habitat loss threaten this natural heritage.

To help close that gap, the Mediterranean Forest Genetic Resources (MEDFORGEN) project, led by EFI Mediterranean and funded by the EU, is hosting “Voices of the Mediterranean Forests”, a fully funded media workshop taking place from 30 November to 2 December 2026 at the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site in Barcelona.

The workshop will bring together up to 12 journalists and environmental communicators from across the Mediterranean for three days of intensive training in forest biodiversity communication. Participants will explore innovative formats, from digital storytelling and storymaps to community-based media, and co-create communication strategies tailored to their own countries and audiences. They will leave with practical tools, fresh perspectives, and a lasting network of forest communicators.

Active journalists, science communicators, photographers, filmmakers, podcasters, and digital content creators from Mediterranean countries are invited to apply. The workshop is conducted in English, and selected participants will receive support including return travel to Barcelona, accommodation, and meals.

Applications close on 15 August 2026 and are submitted through an online form, including a short biography, a motivation statement, and examples of published or produced work.

The workshop is organised by EFIMED with the German Consulate General in Barcelona, which coordinates outreach through German Embassies across the region.
