Sustainability transitions and the bioeconomy are reshaping the forest sector, driving a shift from timber-focused models towards more integrated and multifunctional approaches. These recognise a wider range of forest values, from wood products to non-timber forest products and ecosystem services.
The upcoming IUFRO conference “Forest-Based Value Chains in Transition” will explore these dynamics, focusing on innovation, employment, diversity, and inclusion in forest-based economies. Organised by IUFRO Research Group 4.05 (Managerial Economics and Accounting), the event will take place from 23 to 26 November 2026 in Bolzano-Bozen, Italy.
Discussions will address how value chains, governance systems, accounting frameworks and data-driven methods can support more equitable and sustainable outcomes. Particular attention will be given to multifunctional forest management and the role of wood-processing systems and non-wood forest products in building resilient economies.
Hosted by Eurac Research and the Thünen Institute of Forestry, the conference will bring together researchers and practitioners to share insights and advance knowledge on forest sector transitions.
The deadline for abstract submission has been extended to 30 June 2026, with acceptance notifications expected by 20 July. Registration opens on 1 July 2026.
