The European State Forest Association (EUSTAFOR) has released its fourth episode of their podcast series “The State of the Forests”. This time, it takes a timely look at one of the most influential policy files expected from Brussels this season: the upcoming EU Bioeconomy Strategy. As forests play an increasingly central role in Europe’s green transition, the discussion around how to harness their potential, while ensuring biodiversity, resilience and sustainability.
In this episode, host Roberto Stelstra speaks with Siebe Briers, expert at the European Forest Institute (EFI) and Deputy Coordinator of the Bio Regions Facility. Fresh from EFI’s Bio Regions Summit in Brussels, Siebe offers valuable insight into how Europe can strengthen innovation, empower its regions and build a truly circular, forest-based bioeconomy. The conversation explores how multifunctional forest management underpins the entire bioeconomy, balancing renewable raw materials with essential ecosystem services such as biodiversity, carbon sequestration, water regulation and recreation. Siebe explained why active forest management is key to achieving climate benefits, from reducing wildfire risks to ensuring a steady supply of quality wood for long-term carbon storage in buildings and other products. Drawing on recent examples from across Europe, including Flanders, Catalonia and Austria, he illustrated how regions are already implementing innovative approaches on the ground.
Siebe highlighted the need for improved skills, better entrepreneurship training for scientists, more specialised investment instruments and stronger regional innovation ecosystems to help bridge this gap. He also reflected on the regulatory environment, noting that what industry often needs is not less regulation, but clearer, faster and more harmonised processes that enable innovation while safeguarding sustainability.
Siebe emphasised that the bioeconomy should be seen not only as an environmental tool but as a strategic investment in Europe’s resilience, competitiveness and energy independence. Stressing the importance of working closely with regions and state forest management organisations, who are essential partners in translating European ambition into real, local impact.
