The RESILIENT TREES project, funded under Interreg Europe 2021–2027, aims to enhance biodiversity protection through improved policies for the conservation of old-growth forests (OGF) and monumental-veteran trees (MVT). These elements are vital for ecosystem resilience, biodiversity, climate adaptation, and human well-being. However, they remain underrepresented and poorly protected across Europe.
Albania is represented in the project by two key partners: PSEDA-ILIRIA, a long-standing environmental NGO, and the National Forestry Agency (NFA). Both organizations are working together to address gaps in national legislation and technical guidelines concerning OGF and MVT. Currently, Albania lacks official definitions, inventory protocols, and protection strategies for these forest elements.
The partners aim to develop national guidelines for identifying, mapping, managing, and protecting OGF and MVT, based on scientific criteria and best practices from other European regions. These guidelines will influence Albania’s national forestry and biodiversity strategies and contribute to the drafting of practical action plans.
Through stakeholder engagement, local implementation (notably in Tropoja municipality), and exchange with international partners, Albania will advance its forest policy framework in alignment with EU environmental standards. The efforts are expected to result in sustainable forest management and enhanced biodiversity conservation across the country.
