The European Forest Institute (EFI) will host a ThinkForest Ask a Scientist webinar on Carbon Farming in European Forests on Monday, 7 April 2025, from 14:00 to 15:30 CEST. The event will bring together leading experts to examine how carbon farming in forestry can support the EU’s climate goals.
Understanding carbon farming
Carbon farming in forestry focuses on increasing carbon sequestration while preserving ecosystem health and biodiversity. Key practices include afforestation, extending rotation periods, diversifying forest structure, and restoring peatlands. Forests cover nearly 40% of Europe’s land area and are expected to play a key role in helping the EU achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
However, implementing carbon farming faces challenges such as ensuring long-term carbon storage, preventing market leakage, and accurately measuring sequestration benefits. Effective policy alignment, robust monitoring systems, and financial incentives are essential to scaling up these practices.
Expert perspectives
The webinar will explore findings from the EFI’s From Science to Policy publication on carbon farming. It will provide an opportunity for participants to engage with leading researchers and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved.
Speakers include:
- Helga Pülzl – Assistant Director, European Forest Institute
- Tommaso Chiti – Professor, University of Tuscia, Italy
