The Mediterranean region is one of the richest in the world in terms of cultural and natural heritage. In this region, forests are extraordinarily rich in terms of species and genetic diversity. Yet, today, Mediterranean forests face many challenges including climate change, population growth, and political instability.

In a video developed by CIHEAM Zaragoza, Magda Bou Dagher Kharrat, Principal Scientist at EFIMED, highlights the importance of maintaining a balance between the elements that constitute the Mediterranean mosaic landscape: forests, pastures, and agriculture.

The video is part of the El Mirador series, where experts and scientists participating in the activities of CIHEAM Zaragoza are asked to explore the future of agrifood systems. Magda was one of the trainers involved in the advanced course “Management strategies to improve the resilience of Mediterranean forests”, organised in April 2024 by CIHEAM Zaragoza and CREAF, with the collaboration of EFI. This course provided participants with an operational framework to analyse the resilience of Mediterranean forests, the latest knowledge on the best management practices to cope with the forest disturbances, strategies, and tools for the integration of these management practices to ensure the resilience of Mediterranean forests.
