The 8th edition of the Mediterranean Forest Week (8MFW) takes a major step forward with the launch of its official website mediterraneanforestweek.org.

The 8MFW website serves as a central hub for all information regarding the upcoming event, taking place from 4 to 8 November 2024, in Barcelona, Spain. This edition, “Working together for sustainable and resilient Mediterranean forests – Towards a collaborative roadmap” will focus on forest ecosystem restoration across the region. Mediterranean Forest Week (MFW) is a biennial event providing a vital platform for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to foster dialogue and cooperation on the challenges and opportunities faced by Mediterranean forests.

Key Features of the website

The programme overview provides a global view of the whole week of activities with session descriptions for the six plenary sessions. These cover a wide range of topics, including resilience strategies, wildfire management, biodiversity, climate change adaptation, and sustainable urban planning, and there is an open call for posters associated to the sessions. An open call for side events invites actors around the Mediterranean to propose an event to share their insights, projects and experience on key issues for Mediterranean forests. Visitors to the website will find essential information about the venue, the magnificent Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site in Barcelona, Spain, with details on travel and accommodation options.

A special focus is placed on the Mediterranean Youth Dialogue, which encourages the active participation of young professionals in the forest sector.

The website also highlights the collaborative efforts of the Joint Organising Committee, comprising FAO, EFI, Silva Mediterranea, and other key partners, demonstrating a unified approach to tackling the pressing issues faced by Mediterranean forests.

The website will be continuously updated as more information becomes available, and registrations for the event will open soon.

The 8MFW will bring forestry experts and practitioners, the research community, policy makers and other stakeholders from civil society and the private sector together for regional forest cooperation and dialogue to collectively address the challenges faced across the Mediterranean.

About the 8th Mediterranean Forest Week

Mediterranean forests play a crucial role in the region’s environmental, social and economic fabric. Despite an increase in forest cover due to land use changes, challenges such as land degradation, wildfires, and climate change persist.

Focusing on the theme “Working together for sustainable and resilient Mediterranean forests,” the 8MFW aims to develop a collaborative roadmap for the sustainable management and restoration of Mediterranean forest ecosystems. For this, it will delve into solutions for these issues through interactive sessions, expert discussions, and collaborative initiatives.

The 8MFW aims to highlight regional efforts that align with global commitments like the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Convention on Biological Diversity. The event will also showcase successful landscape restoration projects and promote integrated forest management practices.
