ForestWISE aims to develop research, innovation and transfer of technology activities in order to enhance the competitiveness of the Portuguese forest industry and to minimise the negative effects of rural fires. Therefore, it fulfils the purposes of the Council of Ministers Resolution no. 159/2017, through the joint efforts of universities, public sector and industry, on a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to issues related to fire, forest enhancement and sustainable development of the forest-based industry. ForestWise was awarded the Collaborative Laboratory (CoLAB) title in 2018 by FCT, the Portuguese public agency for science, technology and innovation.

As such, ForestWISE CoLAB emerges as an R&D&I institution with an emphasis on knowledge transfer that brings together the multiple interdisciplinary areas that are relevant for building a holistic and cohesive approach for the problem of rural fires, as well as the directly related problem of the valorisation of forest (market and non-market) products and services.

The ForestWISE Collaborative Laboratory (CoLAB) begins its activity by opening more than two dozen vacancies for senior researchers and project managers across a range of research opportunities.
